I want to retire in Panama! Well, I should at least visit first
Panama is currently my number 1 place to consider retiring to for a few good reasons; Panama has a very strong economy, is the most advanced country in Central America from a thriving economy perspective, as well it is the most developed in terms of catering to the retiree, finally it’s just a short flight to the U.S.
Panama features beautiful beaches with a modern infrastructure (they even have a Costco and a Walmart). Panama City is a modern city with everything you would expect in a modern city as in North America.
Some of our other recommendations on the site are a little more rustic you’ll find all the modern amenities in Panama.
Panama cost of living for retirees has gone up in recent years due to its popularity but the government works hard to attract expats to their country. Taxies are cheap, wine is very inexpensive and the restaurants are very affordable.
There are many retirement communities to consider when considering to retire in Panama. In addition, very affordable condominiums can be found near the beaches in the cities and in the coastal towns adding convenience if you are there only part of the year.
Panama has what’s called the Pensionado Program developed specifically for retirees. The program offers discounts on already inexpensive items and services saving you more money.
Panama caters heavily to expats providing deep discounts (25%-50%) for everyday costs like taxis, buses, airline tickets, entertainment and dining. You can even get discounts on flights leaving Panama.
The area of Bocas is very popular with expats and retirees. It has one of the most beautiful beaches and tropical rainforest. Visitors from all over make this area very attractive for those looking for activities and have an active lifestyle in retirement.
The Weather is very nice, the average temperature 27C/81F, the rainy season is April to November.
Panama is situated on two coasts, one on the Caribbean and the other on the Pacific, Panama also offers mountain vistas for those of you who do not want to be in the city or beach side.
You have a multitude of options in terms of location to pick from should you choose to retire in Panama.
Healthcare
Healthcare in Panama is varied but overall very good, there are private clinics available and major hospitals in the city of David and of course in Panama City. Most doctors are trained in the U.S. Insurance is very cheap and medication is widely available most of which comes from the U.S.
Is it safe?
Roads are the biggest concern in Panama. Crime in Panama is not unlike a large City Center in North America. Most Crime is related to theft petty crimes etc. Assault crimes in 2006 were reported at 54 per 100,000. Petty crimes like pick pocketing are not a concern like in some of the less modern countries.
Overall Potential
There is a reason why Panama is one of the worlds most popular places to retire in the world, great medical care, amenities, weather, and economy make it the top place to consider when looking for a similar lifestyle to home.
